To learn more…The legend of Ceres and Proserpina
One day, while Proserpina, Ceres’ daughter, was
picking up flowers near the Etna Vulcan, the earth
opened and Pluto came out to kidnap the young girl and
marry her.
Ceres, desperate, asked her brother Jupiter to intercede
to get her daughter back. However, Ceres could not go
back to the earth undeterminably, as she had by all
means become the bride of Pluto. Having received no for
an answer, Ceres yielded to her sorrow and disappeared,
giving up care for the fields, which became dry and
lifeless. Therefore Jupiter decided that Proserpina
would be able to go back to her mother every year for
six months.
The legend says that every year Proserpina rises from
the depths of the earth bringing the spring flow of
abundance, only to disappear again with the arrival of
the cold weather in the winter.
